3. FROM THE FINAL DRAFT PRODUCT MANAGER

We've decided to add to our newsletter a new section from the Final Draft Product Manager that will discuss Final Draft, its features, tips for using it and general comments about the craft of screenwriting. We receive a variety of questions and suggestions from users, and some of them are worth addressing in a more public forum. We hope you'll find this helpful.

Many users have asked about screenplay format and which format is correct, which is not, what to do to make their script stand out, etc. First, out of the box, Final Draft's default template is writer-ready in industry approved Hollywood spec format. Choose another template such as Half-Hour Sitcom, and you'll be ready to write in that format as well. No tinkering, no adjusting, no second-guessing.

In either case, you'll do fine if you don't adjust a thing. The truth is, unless you're already working on a TV show or at a studio/production company that has format guidelines specific to them, there's no need to worry about formatting. Final Draft handles that for you. The best way to impress someone with your script is by its content.

That said, you can customize the layout of your script either on the fly or by changing the default Element's margins (Format > Elements). Be careful about this. While there is no true absolute screenplay format, there is only so much leeway that is considered acceptable. When in doubt, just write a great script and don't worry about how it looks and whether or not you should use two brass brads or three. It's the content that matters.

Keep writing!
