2. Podcast: Sherlock Scribes

In the November/December issue of SCRIPT, all four Sherlock Holmes scribes discuss their role in shaping the perennial detective for a modern audience. Though each of the men is undoubtedly proud of his unique contribution, all agree the film was characterized by writers, actors, director and crew working in league. Listen as Lionel Wigram, Michael Robert Johnson, Simon Kinberg, and Tony Peckham talk about the process on the project.

3. Interview: Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner on Up in the Air

Up in the Air has become the critical smash of the season. Following an enthusiastic reception at a number of film fests earlier this year, the movie -- which stars George Clooney as Ryan Bingham, a “career transition counselor” who spends the majority of his life happily living on airplanes as he travels around the country firing people -- has opened to extremely strong reviews, very solid returns, and honors in early awards contests. SCRIPT recently spoke with screenwriters Sheldon Turner and Jason Reitman (who also directed) and asked them how they brought Walter Kirn's 2001 novel to the screen.

4. Videocast: BIG BREAK Winner Wyatt Wakeman

This year's BIG BREAK winner was a Final Draft, Inc. first, with two scripts landing in the top 10. Wyatt Wakeman submitted Borderland and Minus Men, both vastly different screenplays (the former an indie drama, the latter an action-adventure romp), which not only showcased his excellent storytelling skills, but also showed his range as a screenwriter. While Borderland won the BIG BREAK contest, Wakeman is currently in rewrites with Minus Men and has signed with Benderspink management. Here, Wakeman discusses his first-place finisher Borderland, and imparts his knowledge as a writer who has submitted to tons of contests in the past, only to finally find success through persistence and showing his range.

5. Blog: Staton Rabin's Zen and the Art of Guerrilla Script Marketing

We've all heard it before: “It's not what you know, it's who you know." But I'm here to tell you that, when it comes to contacts, most of what you've heard about Hollywood is dead wrong. It's not about the contacts you have. It's about the contacts you make. And you make them based on the quality of your work, not on “who you know.” You want powerful advocates who admire your work, not people who are helping you simply because your second cousin knows Brad Pitt.

6. Ultimate Writers Workspace Giveaway: Thanks for the Human Touch

From the outset, my wife Kristin gave him the cold shoulder. She would say the most unwelcoming things like 'where are we going to put him?' and 'he doesn't really match the décor.' HT 5005 was stoic about it, but I sensed that her words stung him. He was patient. HT knew that all Kristin had to do was take one bite of the apple. It happened one Thursday evening. She cautiously eased onto his indulgent lap.

It's On the Grid
"So, what exactly is on the grid?" The site was started by a group of MP Lit managers who were trying to solve two problems: 1. Build a great tool to track spec scripts, one that would have easy, searchable access to the "who, what, where, when and how" for every spec on the market; and 2. Collaborate effectively to collect the same type of information about studio open writing assignments. The result is itsonthegrid.com, a web-based database of feature film projects in active development in Hollywood; every spec script that's gone out wide since the beginning of 2009 (and most of what came out in 2008); every company involved with every project (over 600 agencies, management companies, production companies, studios and other buyers); and every person associated each project (over 3000 agents, managers, executives, producers, directors and writers). For more information, or to subscribe to this one-of-a-kind service, visit www.itsonthegrid.com.
