2. The May/June Issue of Script is on Newsstands Now!
In the May/June issue of Script, John Cusack, Jeremy Pikser, and Mark Leyner anatomize a pivotal scene from their upcoming War, Inc. Hawk Otsby & Mark Fergus and Art Marcum & Matt Holloway explain their tag-team script for the box-office mega-hit Iron Man. Animation writers from adult (Family Guy) and children's (Clifford the Big Red Dog) shows illustrate the challenges of "breaking all the rules" for cartoons. Screenwriting mentors Simon Kinberg (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Jumper) and Christopher Morgan (Cellular, Wanted) workshop a scene from Shiela Bishop Irwin's American Tiger in Script's popular new feature, "Scene Fix."
Also in this issue, Jacob Forman explains the horror-immersion he experienced prior to tackling his All the Boys Love Mandy Lane script. Marshall Herskovitz discusses Quarterlife's revolutionary leap from the Internet to the small screen -- and back again. Ray Morton examines the legendary screenplays that burned up the box office over the last 30 years. And William Martell revisits Alfred Hitchcock's silent era for the cause of visual storytelling.

3. Script to Screen: Son of Rambow
While the characters in Garth Jennings' Son of Rambow play war, a real Sundance bidding war broke out over rights to the film. Jennings drew largely on his own childhood, his affinity for Sly, and his partnership with Nick Goldsmith to bring Son of Rambow to the screen.

As an award-winning producer, Meg LeFauve learned how to give notes, but she didn't learn how to take them. While LeFauve, with partner John Morgan, workshopped her Cavanaughs script at the Sundance Screenwriters Lab, she discovered her writerly side -- and found it a little reptilian.

6. Script Extra Edition: WGA Honorary Awards Luncheon
Writers Feted at WGA Honorary Awards Luncheon
by Joe Lajam
Final Draft attended the 2008 WGAW Honorary Awards Luncheon on April 23rd in Los Angeles. With this year’s strike-dictated cancellation of the WGA's black-tie awards ceremony, winning writers were greeted upon arrival with their awards statues.
In addition to the Guild anniversary celebration of 75 years, lifetime honors were given to Budd Schulberg (On the Waterfront), David Chase (The Sopranos), Robert Eisele & Jeffrey Porro (The Great Debaters), Tom Schulman (Dead Poets Society), Don M. Mankiewicz (Ironside), and Brad Bird (The Incredibles). When accepting his Screen Laurel Award, 94-year-old Schulberg reminded everyone of a time when being a member of the Writers Guild meant secret meetings in basements for fear of oppression from studio heads like Irving Thalberg. With the end of 2007's 100-day strike so fresh in people’s minds, it was a glimpse into the struggles of those who had come before.
Recipient of the Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award For Television, Chase used the stage as an opportunity to not only acknowledge his writing staff, but also the support and contributions of his wife. Bird, in accepting the Animation Writers Caucus lifetime achievement award joked that he hoped receiving a “lifetime achievement” award didn’t signal the end of his career as he still has kids to put through college. Using the well-known Dorothy Parker quote, “I hate writing. I love having written,” Bird nicely summed up both the struggles and the rewards that all writers, professional and aspiring.
Eisele & Porro were honored for their Great Debaters script with the Paul Selvin Award, which celebrates written work that embodies the spirit of constitutional rights and civil liberties. The Great Debaters tells the true story of the 1935 Wiley College African-American debate team, led by professor Melvin B. Tolson.
